"The Suffering of the Deceased"

"The Suffering of the Deceased"

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The time when a deceased person suffers the most is when they are taken out of their home, and their family weeps for them. The suffering increases even more when they are laid in the grave, covered with soil, and left alone as everyone departs.

The pain intensifies when their clothes, ornaments, and rings are removed from their body. At that moment, the soul cries out loudly—a cry that is heard by all except humans and jinn. The soul then exclaims:

"I swear by Allah! Remove my clothes, ornaments, and belongings gently, as I have just been relieved from the severe torment of the Angel of Death."

When the body is washed, it pleads:
"O those who are giving me the final bath, do not scrub my body harshly, for the torment of the Angel of Death has already left my body wounded and battered."

When the deceased is being shrouded, the body exclaims:
"O those wrapping me in the shroud, do not be in such a hurry! Let me see my wife, children, daughters, relatives, and friends one last time, for this will be my final farewell. I will not see them again until the Day of Judgment."

When the deceased is carried from their home to the cemetery, they cry out:
"O my relatives, I beg you in the name of Allah, do not rush me to the graveyard. Give me a little time to bid farewell to my home, my wife, and my children. I am leaving them behind—my wife will become a widow, my children will become orphans. Please, do not be unjust to them. I am leaving everything behind and will never return."

As the deceased is taken toward the grave, they lament:
"O my family, my relatives, my neighbors! Do not be deceived by the temporary pleasures of this world as I was. Look at me—I worked hard to gather wealth, without distinguishing between halal and haram, but nothing is coming with me. My wealth is being divided among my heirs, and only my sins are accompanying me. Those for whom I sinned are not sharing my burden."

After the funeral prayer, as people begin to leave, the deceased cries out:
"O my friends! How much love we had for each other! How can you leave me now? At least make a small prayer for me before you go."

"O my friends, today I have become unwanted among you. But there was a time when you could not spend a single day without seeing me. I am leaving behind my wealth, property, and everything for you. I will never ask for anything again—just offer a prayer for me."

"Do not become engrossed in luxury with the wealth I leave behind. Instead, give charity on my behalf, recite the Quran for me, and seek Allah's mercy for my soul. Remember, one day, you too will have to leave this world just as I did."

O Allah, forgive us all and guide us on the right path. Ameen.
