What is Kalima?

 

The word "Kalima" is derived from the Arabic word "كلمة" (Kalimah), which means "word" or "speech." In Islam, "Kalima" specifically refers to the words or statement that a Muslim declares as the foundation of their belief.

In Islam, Kalima refers to the religious declaration or statement that represents a Muslim’s faith or belief. It is a word, sentence, or phrase that declares belief in Allah and His Messenger. It is a declaration of a Muslim’s faith in the oneness of Allah and in the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Kalima or Kalimah: The name Kalima refers to a set of Arabic phrases that encapsulate the basic beliefs of Islam. It is through this declaration that the first pillar of Islam, Shahada (Testimony of Faith), is fulfilled. This precious statement holds great significance and is connected to various religious rulings and commands. There are a total of six Kalimas in Islam.

Importance of Kalima:

Declaration of Oneness:

Kalima declares the Muslim’s belief in one Allah. It follows the concept of Tawhid (Oneness), which means that there is no god but Allah. This belief is the fundamental creed of Islam, guiding the Muslim’s life in accordance with Allah's commands.

Belief in the Prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH):

The Kalima also declares belief in the Prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH). Through Muhammad (PBUH), Allah’s complete guidance has been delivered to humanity, and he is regarded as the last and final Prophet.

Foundation of Faith:

Kalima establishes the foundation of Iman (faith). When Muslims recite the Kalima, they reaffirm their faith and prepare themselves to earn Allah’s pleasure in both this world and the Hereafter.

Freedom from Shirk:

By reciting the Kalima, Muslims are freed from all forms of Shirk (associating partners with Allah), such as idol worship and the worship of other deities. Through it, they express their exclusive submission and belief in the Oneness of Allah, which is the most fundamental foundation of Islam.

Religious Unity and Discipline:

The Kalima fosters religious unity and discipline among Muslims. It instills a sense of loyalty to Islam and unites all Muslims in one common belief.

The Role of Kalima in Muslim Life:

In Prayer (Salah):

In every prayer (Salah), the Tashahhud (testification) recites the Kalima Tayyibah or Kalima Shahada as an expression of the Muslim’s faith.

In Daily Life:

Muslims recite the Kalima Tayyibah or Kalima Shahada in their daily lives. This helps guide their actions towards Allah and keeps them focused on their faith.

At the Time of Death:

There is special significance in reciting the Kalima at the time of death and during the burial process, as it is believed to be the path to salvation for the soul.

Internal Impact of Kalima:

A strong belief in Kalima strengthens an individual’s self-confidence and helps them to live a life guided by the correct path. It establishes a relationship between the individual and Allah, which leads them to live a life based on righteousness, compassion, patience, and justice.

Thus, Kalima is not just a statement but the core foundation of a Muslim’s life. It shapes their daily actions, thoughts, and behavior, ensuring that Allah’s commands are established in all aspects of their life.
