Ashara Mubashshara

Ashara Mubashshara (عشرة مبشّرة‎)

Those who already believe that they have learned and understood everything, who think there is nothing beyond what they have studied, and those who pretend to know too much—please do not read this.

The following ten companions of the Prophet (PBUH) are often mentioned as having received the glad tidings of Paradise during their lifetime:

  1. Abu Bakr (RA)

  2. Umar (RA)

  3. Uthman (RA)

  4. Ali (AS)

  5. Talha (RA)

  6. Zubair (RA)

  7. Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (RA)

  8. Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (RA)

  9. Ubaydah ibn Jarrah (RA)

  10. Sa'id ibn Zayd (RA)

However, this is completely false, a fabricated hadith. Providing evidence based on textual sources alone would take years, as one would first need to impart fundamental knowledge of hadith authentication. So, instead, I will present a logical argument, which I hope the knowledgeable readers will understand.

  1. No wise leader would announce the final rewards of his followers in advance, as it would discourage others from making sacrifices. It is therefore unnatural for a leader to declare a select few as successful beforehand. If one argues that Allah conveyed this message through the Prophet (PBUH), then that would require proof. This claim diminishes the Prophet’s (PBUH) position.

  2. The so-called "Ashara Mubashshara" (Ten Promised Paradise) were all from the Muhajirun; not a single one was from the Ansar. However, the Muhajirun were vastly outnumbered by the Ansar. The Ansar were the residents of Medina who gave refuge and support to Islam and its Prophet. Their sacrifice and dedication were unparalleled. Is it believable that none of them received the glad tidings of Paradise before death?

  3. Allah and His Messenger (PBUH) have repeatedly praised the sacrifices of the Ansar. The Quran and hadith contain abundant evidence of this. To accept the "Ashara Mubashshara" hadith, one would have to disregard these statements.

  4. Among those outside the Prophet’s (PBUH) bloodline, the most honored companion he explicitly mentioned was Salman al-Farsi (RA). Yet, he was not included among the "glad tidings" recipients.

  5. There is no mention of any woman in this list, which is highly unusual. The title "Khatoon-e-Jannat" (Leader of the Women of Paradise) is widely known, referring to Lady Fatima (AS). How can this list exclude her?

  6. Including Imam Ali (AS) in the list while excluding his sons, the two leaders of the youth of Paradise (Hasan and Husayn, AS), is an insult to him. Similar to how it would be disrespectful to Prophet Moses (AS) if someone fabricated a hadith about Paradise excluding his brother, Aaron (AS).

  7. The Quran states that anyone who fights against believers is undoubtedly a disbeliever (4:92-93, 48:25). In order to justify fighting against Imam Ali (AS), fabricated hadiths such as the "Ashara Mubashshara" were created during the Abbasid rule.

Among those supposedly promised Paradise was Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (RA), who was instrumental in the selection of the first caliph. He was influenced by Muawiya, the chief conspirator behind the destruction of Islam. Yet, criticizing him is still considered unacceptable. What a strange contradiction among Muslims!

This same cunning Abdur Rahman used deceitful tactics to pressure Imam Ali (AS) into stepping down, paving the way for Muawiya's caliphate. During the Battle of Siffin, when Muawiya's army was on the verge of defeat, Abdur Rahman secretly helped him. Following Amr ibn al-As’s advice, they tied pages of the Quran to their spears, forcing Imam Ali (AS) to halt the battle.

Furthermore, most of these so-called "promised" individuals witnessed Ghadir Khumm, where the Prophet (PBUH) explicitly declared Imam Ali (AS) as his successor. Yet, they ignored this and instead supported Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Abdur Rahman, and Zubair—all of whom appear on this fabricated list.

How could Abu Bakr, who seized Fadak from Lady Fatima (AS), receive the glad tidings of Paradise? It is known that after this injustice, she never responded to his greetings again. How could Umar, who struck Lady Fatima’s (AS) door, breaking her ribs, and dragged Imam Ali (AS) by the rope, be among the blessed? How could the very individuals responsible for the oppression of the Ahlul Bayt be assured of Paradise?

These same individuals played a role in the tragedies that befell the Prophet’s (PBUH) family, culminating in the massacre of Karbala. How, then, can we believe they were granted Paradise?

What do you say?
