Where does Satan reside?

The question, “Where does Satan reside?” often arises in many people’s minds. Does he stay in a specific place? Or does he constantly roam around with humans? Let’s learn in detail about Satan’s location and movement based on the Quran and authentic Hadith.

According to the Quran: Satan Roams Everywhere
Allah Ta’ala says in the Quran: “He (Satan) said, ‘Indeed, I will sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and from their right and from their left.’” (Surah Al-A’raf, 7:16-17)
Explanation:
  • Satan surrounds humans from all sides.
  • He does not stay fixed in one place.
  • He roams everywhere and whispers evil into humans’ hearts.
Satan Dwells in the Human Heart (Whispers Evil)
Allah says: “The one who whispers into the hearts of mankind.” (Surah An-Nas, 114:5)
This indicates that Satan “takes residence” inside the human heart—especially when a person is heedless, lazy in prayer and remembrance (Dhikr).

According to Hadith: Some Specific Places of Satan’s Presence

1. Satan moves through the human bloodstream
The Messenger ﷺ said, “Indeed, Satan flows through the human body like blood.” (Sahih Bukhari: 3381, Sahih Muslim: 2175)
This Hadith clarifies that Satan enters the human body and influences it, especially during emotions like anger, greed, and desire.

2. Satan does not leave a house without Dhikr
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Satan does not stay in a house where Allah’s name is remembered.” (Muslim, Tirmidhi)
Therefore, we should:
  • Perform prayers at home
  • Recite the Quran
  • Regularly do Dhikr
3. Satan sleeps in a fixed place at night
The Prophet ﷺ said, “When one of you gets up at night to pray, Satan ties three knots behind his head... If he remembers Allah, performs ablution, and prays, the knots untie and he wakes up cheerful and lively; otherwise, he remains lazy and heedless.” (Sahih Bukhari: 1142)
Satan also influences people during sleep.

4. Satan cannot stay in mosques (if Dhikr is done)
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Wherever the call to prayer (Adhan) is made, Satan flees and even lifts his legs so as not to hear it.” (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim)
Thus, Adhan, Quran recitation, and Dhikr keep Satan away.

Places where Allah is not remembered Such as marketplaces, during sleep, or lazy environments

The Reality of Satan’s Location
Now, let us explain Satan’s actual location and identity briefly according to the Holy Quran. Satan exists in four forms: Iblis, Satan, Mardud (the rejected), and Khannas (the whisperer). As mentioned in Surah Al-A’raf: “He (Satan) said, ‘Indeed, I will sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and from their right and from their left.’”
This means Satan operates from all sides of the human heart.
Allah Ta’ala states that these four types of Satan have permission to exist only in two specific places. Apart from these two places, they are not allowed anywhere else in the entire creation. These two places are:
  • The heart of the jinn
  • The heart of humans
  • Satan has no power to go even one step outside these two places.

Is a Human Ever Alone?
Every human thinks they are alone, but in reality, they are never alone. Because every person has been given Satan for testing, humans are like “two-in-one.” But this is also not entirely true because alongside the living soul, the whispering Satan resides, and similarly, another presence called the Ruh (the Spirit), which is the Divine Spirit or Allah Himself. Therefore, Allah’s presence is always near the human heart. No other creature is declared to have Allah’s proximity in the Quran like humans.

How to Protect Oneself from Satan?
Allah Ta’ala says: “And if an evil whisper from Satan tries to tempt you, seek refuge in Allah.” (Surah Al-A’raf, 7:200)
Actions to take:
  • Recite “A’udhu billahi minash shaytanir rajim” (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan)
  • Recite the Quran regularly
  • Pray Fajr and Asr prayers in congregation
  • Recite Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls before sleeping
  • Keep Adhan and Dhikr ongoing in home, workplace, and business places

Conclusion
✅ Satan is not confined to a specific place. Instead, he resides in the human heart, all around humans, and in heedless environments.
✅ According to the Quran and Hadith, Satan roams everywhere and tries to enter the body, mind, and surroundings of humans.
✅ Therefore, a Muslim should always remain vigilant, engage in Dhikr, and seek refuge in Allah.
