Surah Al-Fatiha Must Be Recited Before Any Other Surah in Salah
The central verse “Iyyaka na’budu wa iyyaka nasta’in” (“You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help”) sits between the verses introducing Allah and the supplications made to Him. This verse defines our relationship with Allah — one of total devotion and reliance. We worship only Allah, and seek help only from Him.
Proof from Hadith:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "A man came to the mosque, prayed, then greeted the Prophet (PBUH). The Prophet said: ‘Go back and pray again, for you have not prayed.’"
Then the Prophet taught him how to pray correctly, emphasizing the importance of reciting Surah Al-Fatiha. (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim)
Another clear hadith states: “لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ” "There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening Chapter (Surah Al-Fatiha)." (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 756)
From authentic hadiths, we learn that any prayer without reciting Surah Al-Fatiha is invalid.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever does not recite Surah Al-Fatiha in his prayer, his prayer is not accepted."(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 394)
Ruling on Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha Behind an Imam (Brief Overview):
In Loud (Audible) Prayers (e.g., Fajr, Maghrib, Isha):
If the Imam recites aloud, some scholars say the follower may remain silent.
However, most scholars state that if the follower does not recite Surah Al-Fatiha, the prayer is invalid.
In Silent Prayers (e.g., Dhuhr, Asr):
The follower must recite it personally and silently.
There are differences among the Hanafi, Shafi‘i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools of thought — but the safest approach is to recite Surah Al-Fatiha oneself in every rak‘ah.
For Children, New Muslims, or Those Who Haven’t Memorized It Yet:
Those who have not yet memorized Surah Al-Fatiha can recite other du‘as, Qur’anic verses, or phrases of praise, such as:“Subhanallah” (Glory be to Allah),“Alhamdulillah” (All praise is due to Allah)— until they fully learn the Surah.
Why Surah Al-Fatiha Is the Soul of Salah:
Surah Al-Fatiha is the heart and essential part of Salah.
Praying without reciting it is like standing before Allah without saying anything — which defeats the purpose of prayer.
Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to memorize it properly and recite it with full sincerity and focus.
The fifth verse of the Surah says: "Guide us on the Straight Path."
The next two verses explain this straight path in more detail:“The path of those upon whom You have bestowed Your grace, not of those who have earned Your wrath, nor of those who have gone astray.”
So, who are the ones blessed by Allah?
They are the ones who have not gone astray, and therefore, have not incurred Allah’s anger.
