Ten Rewards for Performing the Fajr Prayer

Fajr prayer holds special significance in both its timing and in the act of worship itself. At the beginning of Surah Al-Fajr, Allah says:

“By the dawn.” (Surah Al-Fajr, Ayah 1)

In Islam, the Fajr prayer carries immense importance. According to Hadith, those who regularly perform the Fajr prayer will be granted numerous rewards by Allah. In one hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever performs the Fajr prayer will receive ten rewards.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)

Apart from this, several hadiths describe the blessings and benefits of Fajr. It is not just a ritual prayer, but one with profound virtues and spiritual rewards.

Here are some benefits of performing Fajr prayer:

1. Safety in This Life and the Hereafter:

Fajr provides protection for a Muslim both in this world and in the Hereafter. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah.” (Sahih Muslim)

This protection includes safety from worldly harm, illness, and punishment in the afterlife.

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said:

“Whoever prays Isha in congregation, it is as though he has spent half the night in prayer. And whoever prays Fajr in congregation, it is as though he has prayed the entire night.” (Muslim, Hadith: 1377)

2. Victory Over Shaytan (Satan):

Fajr prayer acts as a defense against Shaytan and his influence. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever prays Fajr, Shaytan stays away from him, and peace and security are established in his life.” (Sahih Muslim)

He also said:

“Whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah.” (Muslim, Hadith: 1379)

3. Accepted Supplications and Forgiveness of Sins:

After Fajr prayer, supplications (du'a) are more likely to be accepted, and Allah forgives sins. Specific du'as made after Fajr bring immense rewards.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“The two rak’ahs of Fajr are better than the world and everything in it.” (Muslim, Hadith: 1573)

4. Special Blessings and Productivity:

One who begins their day with the remembrance of Allah through Fajr prayer experiences a day filled with blessings and success. Those who regularly pray Fajr tend to be more energetic and productive.

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said:

“Whoever performs the two prayers before sunrise (Fajr) and before sunset (‘Asr) will not enter Hell.” (Muslim, Hadith: 1322)

5. Continuous Worship:

Fajr prayer is considered the first act of worship in the day, symbolizing a Muslim's steadfast faith and spiritual discipline.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“The most burdensome prayers for hypocrites are Fajr and Isha. If they knew the reward of these prayers, they would come even if they had to crawl.” (Bukhari, Hadith: 657)

6. Fajr Prayer and Salvation from Hell:

By performing the Fajr prayer regularly, a Muslim’s sins are reduced, and they have the opportunity to be saved from the punishment of Hell. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever regularly performs the Fajr prayer will be protected from the fire of Hell.” (Sahih Muslim)

Companion Anas (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Give glad tidings of perfect light on the Day of Resurrection to those who go to the mosques in the dark of night.” (Ibn Majah, Hadith: 781)

7. Peace in the World and Spiritual Prosperity:

Fajr prayer brings peace and spiritual prosperity to the lives of Muslims. It fosters tranquility, patience, and deepens faith and trust in Allah.

During Fajr, angels change shifts. The angels present your deeds to Allah at this time. In a hadith, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) beautifully explained this:

“Angels take turns among you by night and by day, and they all assemble at the dawn (Fajr) and afternoon (‘Asr) prayers. Then those who have stayed with you overnight ascend (to the heavens), and Allah asks them — though He knows best — ‘In what condition did you leave My servants?’ They reply, ‘We left them while they were praying, and we came to them while they were praying.’” (Bukhari, Hadith: 555)

8. Extra Rewards from Allah:

In another hadith, it is stated:

“Whoever performs the Fajr prayer will receive three extra rewards from Allah — rewards that no one in this world can give.” (At-Tabarani)

According to a narration from Caliph Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA), the Prophet (ﷺ) once sent a battalion toward Najd. They returned quickly with abundant spoils of war. Someone who hadn’t joined the expedition remarked,

“We’ve never seen a battalion return so quickly with so much reward.”

To this, the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Shall I not inform you of a group who returned with even better and faster spoils? They are those who attend the Fajr prayer in congregation and then remain seated remembering Allah until sunrise — they are the ones who return quickly with better rewards.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi: 3641)

9. Praise from the Prophet (ﷺ):

Those who perform the Fajr prayer have been praised by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). This is a unique honor and shows the spiritual significance of this act.

Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) narrated:

“We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when he looked at the full moon and said, ‘You will see your Lord just as you see this moon. You will have no difficulty in seeing Him.’”

(This comparison emphasizes the clarity and reward associated with the worship of Allah, including through Fajr.)

10. Du’a (Supplication) is Readily Accepted:

After the Fajr prayer, supplications are quickly accepted by Allah. This time is spiritually powerful and brings success and blessings in one’s life.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“When one of you goes to sleep, Satan ties three knots at the back of his neck. With each knot he says, ‘You have a long night ahead, so sleep.’ If the person wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is undone. If he performs ablution (wudu), the second is undone. If he prays, the third is undone, and he wakes up cheerful and energetic. Otherwise, he wakes up sluggish and gloomy.” (Bukhari, Hadith: 1142)

Conclusion:

The significance of the Fajr prayer is immense. We should be consistently mindful of performing it, not as a ritual, but as a vital connection with Allah and a means of earning His mercy and favor. Regularly observing Fajr opens the door to success and peace in both this world and the Hereafter.
