The Importance and Necessity of the Pir-Murid Relationship in Light of the Qur'an and Hadith
In Islam, attaining inner purification (tazkiyah), knowledge (ilm), and practicing spirituality (tasawwuf) requires a sincere and righteous guide. This guide is referred to as a Pir or Murshid, and one who pledges allegiance (bay’ah) to such a guide for the sake of self-purification is called a Murid (disciple).
In Light of the Qur’an:
“O you who
believe! Fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.” — (Surah At-Tawbah: 119)
🔹 In this verse, Allah instructs
believers to remain in the company of the truthful and righteous. A Pir or
Murshid is among such sincere and pious servants of Allah whose company leads
one back to the path of righteousness.
Allah says, “Beware! For Allah, only a pure and sincere religion (deen) is
acceptable.”
🔹 To truly worship Allah, one must attain both external and internal purity. Without purification of the heart (qalb), impure intentions will arise, hindering the path to sincere deen. And Allah demands pure religion devoted to Him.
In Light of Hadith:
"The
one who has no Shaykh (spiritual guide), his Shaykh is Shaytan." —
(Cited in classical tasawwuf literature)
🔹 This saying implies that without a
proper spiritual guide, a person may easily be misled by desires and deviance.
A true guide is necessary for inner spiritual progress.
Another Hadith says:
“Shaytan
sits upon the hearts of people. If the heart is engaged in dhikr (remembrance),
Shaytan cannot remain. But if the heart is heedless, Shaytan returns to whisper
evil.”
🔹 Thus, continuous dhikr of Allah is essential to protect
the heart from Shaytan’s influence. A heart affected by Shaytan becomes impure
and misguided.
It is also narrated:
“Deeds
are judged by intention.”
And:
“Indeed, in the body is a piece of flesh
— if it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupt, the whole body
is corrupt. That is the heart.”
🔹 Hence, purifying the intention and the heart is foundational in Islam — which requires guidance.
Practice of the Sahabah (Companions):
The noble companions used to take bay’ah (pledge) at the hands of the Prophet
Muhammad ﷺ. For example: “They pledge allegiance to
you to listen and obey.” — (Surah
Al-Fath: 10)
🔹 This system of bay’ah continues through the awliya and true scholars, the spiritual heirs of the Prophet ﷺ, since he is no longer physically present.
The Process of Spiritual Purification:
🔹 Just as a patient cannot recover
without a doctor,
🔹 Likewise, one afflicted with spiritual diseases cannot attain
purification (tazkiyah) without a
qualified Pir or Murshid.
Benefits of Pir-Murid Relationship:
1.
Purification of
the soul and freedom from sins
2.
Growth in
knowledge and religious understanding
3.
Closeness to
Allah
4.
Consistency in
dhikr and worship
5. Moral and character development (akhlaq)
Caution:
Choosing a righteous, Sunnah-following, and God-fearing Pir is essential. Following a misguided, worldly, or innovation-promoting (bid'ah) figure can lead to harm.
Conclusion:
The Pir-Murid
system is not an innovation; rather, it is a deeply rooted spiritual tradition based on Qur’an and
Sunnah. For attaining closeness to Allah, purifying the heart, and living a
truly Islamic life, it is vital to submit to a sincere and God-appointed
Murshid.
From among such Murshids, Allah appoints some for the revival of complete Shari'ah and Deen — these are known as Mujaddids (revivers). May Allah grant us the understanding to accept the truth, and the sincerity to act upon it. May He give us the tawfiq to take bay’ah with a righteous, God-fearing Murshid.
