17th Ramadan – The Historic Day of Badr
Reflections on the Battle of Badr: Allah’s Mercy and the Prophetic Knowledge of the Unseen
Today, the 17th of Ramadan, marks the historic day of the Battle of Badr. On March 16, 624 AD (2nd Hijri), Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, along with 313 companions, engaged in a fierce battle against the disbelievers at a place called Badr, located 80 miles southwest of Madinah. This battle is famously known as the Battle of Badr. The commander of this historic battle was none other than the Prophet ﷺ himself. Before the battle, he supplicated to Allah:
"O Allah! If this small group of Muslims is destroyed today, then there will be no one left to take Your name until the Day of Judgment."
This heartfelt prayer from the Prophet ﷺ reflects the dire circumstances surrounding the battle. By Allah’s mercy, angels descended to assist the believers. Although it was a small battle in numbers, its impact reshaped the political landscape of the time. Those who had previously sought to obstruct Islam’s progress realized that stopping this movement was not only difficult but impossible.
The Prophet ﷺ led an army of only 313 men, including 70 Muhajirun (migrants from Makkah) and the rest Ansar (helpers from Madinah). In contrast, the Quraysh army had 1,000 warriors, including 100 cavalrymen, 700 camel riders, and the rest on foot. Despite fasting, hunger, and limited resources, the small yet resolute Muslim force defeated the heavily armed army of falsehood. This battle established the ultimate distinction between truth and falsehood, making it a day of clear differentiation.
The Spirit of Badr: A Lesson in Faith and Sacrifice
The Battle of Badr was not fought merely for conquest, bloodshed, or destruction. Instead, it showcased an exemplary spirit of humanity, devotion, and sacrifice. The Muslims engaged in both physical jihad against the enemy and spiritual jihad against their own desires. Their unwavering commitment to faith, even while fasting and enduring hardship, sets an unparalleled example in history.
The immediate causes of the battle included previous skirmishes such as the Nakhla expedition, the Quraysh’s war preparations, Abu Sufyan’s propaganda, and divine revelation instructing the Muslims to prepare for war. Indirect causes included the Quraysh’s jealousy over the successful establishment of Islam in Madinah, the conspiracies of Abdullah ibn Ubayy (leader of the hypocrites) and the Jewish tribes, threats of war from Makkah, disruption of Quraysh trade routes, and their desire to eradicate Islam and the Prophet ﷺ.
Significance and Consequences of the Battle of Badr
The victory at Badr was a turning point in Islamic history. It strengthened the faith of Muslims, boosted their confidence, and laid the foundation for future conquests. This battle:
-
Marked the first major victory in Islam
-
Weakened the power of the Quraysh
-
Established the Islamic state
-
Inspired future jihad efforts
-
Demonstrated Allah’s divine support for the believers
-
Showed the world that the Prophet ﷺ was indeed divinely guided
Ramadan is a month of self-discipline and spiritual struggle. Just as the early Muslims dedicated themselves to both inner purification and external struggle against oppressive forces, we too must follow their example.
The Battle’s Outcome
Before the battle, Allah had already revealed to the Prophet ﷺ:
"One of the two parties will be yours." (Surah Al-Anfal: 7)
The two groups referred to Abu Sufyan’s trade caravan and Abu Jahl’s army. The latter suffered a humiliating defeat. Seventy Quraysh warriors, including Abu Jahl, Utbah, Walid, Shaybah, and Umayyah, were killed, while another seventy were taken captive. On the Muslim side, 14 companions attained martyrdom—6 from the Muhajirun and 8 from the Ansar.
Allah’s Divine Assistance
This battle demonstrated Allah’s unseen help for the believers. Angels descended to fight alongside the Muslims:
"Remember when your Lord inspired the angels, saying: 'Indeed, I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, so strike them upon the necks and strike their fingertips and joints.'” (Surah Al-Anfal: 11-12)
This divine intervention ensured the victory of Islam. Additionally, Satan’s fear of Allah was exposed during this battle:
"And when Satan made their deeds seem fair to them and said: ‘No one can overcome you today, and I am your protector.’ But when the two forces faced each other, he turned on his heels and said, ‘Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I see what you do not see. Indeed, I fear Allah, and Allah is severe in punishment.’” (Surah Al-Anfal: 48)
The Prophetic Knowledge of the Unseen
There were multiple instances in this battle where the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated knowledge of the unseen, proving his divine connection. One such incident involved a captured Quraysh slave who was questioned by the companions about Abu Sufyan’s whereabouts. When he truthfully mentioned the presence of Abu Jahl and others, he was beaten because the Muslims found it hard to believe. However, when he lied about Abu Sufyan, he was left unharmed. The Prophet ﷺ, observing this, said:
"By Allah, he speaks the truth, yet you beat him! And when he lies, you leave him alone!" (Muslim 4470)
Additionally, the Prophet ﷺ pointed to the exact spots where the Quraysh leaders would fall, and they were found dead at those precise locations the next day. This fulfilled his prophecy and reinforced the faith of his followers.
The Treatment of Prisoners
The captives of Badr were treated with great mercy. Those who could not afford ransom were given the opportunity to teach Muslims how to read and write in exchange for their freedom. Eventually, many of them embraced Islam. This act of compassion demonstrated the stark contrast between Islamic justice and the brutality of extremist groups like ISIS, who tarnish the image of Islam through their inhumane actions.
The world does not learn about Islam through books alone but through the actions of its followers. Groups that engage in terrorism do not represent Islam; rather, they distort its true teachings.
Final Thoughts
The Battle of Badr holds immense significance in Islamic history. It was the first armed conflict between truth and falsehood, and had the Muslims lost, Islam might have been wiped out in its infancy. This battle demonstrated the power of faith, divine support, and the ultimate victory of truth.
May Allah grant us the ability to learn from the lessons of Badr and apply them in our lives. Ameen!
