How does Satan deceive humans? What are the four types of Satanic actions mentioned in the Quran?
Allah Ta’ala has sent humans to this world as a test. One of the greatest challenges of this test is Satan’s deception and evil whispering. Satan is the eternal enemy of mankind — he wants humans to stray from the path of truth and justice and end up in Hellfire. Allah Ta’ala has explained Satan’s tactics and methods of deceiving humans many times in the Quran. Here, we will explain the four main actions of Satan in the light of the Quran.
Who is Satan?
The word Satan means rebellious or astray. The original Satan is Iblis, who refused to prostrate before Adam (AS) and was expelled from Allah’s mercy.
“He was one of the jinn, so he disobeyed the command of his Lord.” (Surah Al-Kahf, 18:50)
When Satan became arrogant, he took the form called Iblis. Because he directly disobeyed the order to prostrate before Adam, he became arrogant and thus turned into Iblis. Therefore, Iblis is the first and original form of Satan.
When humans fall into the trap of various desires and greed for worldly life and suffer the blows of worldly conflicts continuously, this state of being attacked and hurt is called Satan.
Where is Satan’s position?
Except for the hearts of jinn and humans, if someone claims that Satan resides anywhere else, then it must be assumed that the person knows nothing about Islam and only spreads confusion by using big words and Arabic grammar tricks, misleading simple people.
The one who desires only this worldly life and nothing beyond it is called a mardud (rejected). The place of the mardud is Habiyah Hellfire, which has no bottom. The person whose desire for the world has no limit must go to the bottomless Habiyah Hell.
Four Types of Satanic Actions in the Quran
01. Whispering (Waswasah)
Satan’s chief weapon is whispering evil into the heart — so that a person makes wrong decisions and forgets Allah’s words.
“He whispers into the hearts of mankind.” (Surah An-Nas, 114:5)
“Indeed, I will lie in wait for them on Your straight path.” (Surah Al-A’raf, 7:17)
Through whispering, Satan:
- Encourages sin
- Makes people heedless
- Causes doubt
- Drowns people in arrogance
02. Making Sin Appealing
Satan always makes humans greedy for this world. He seduces them with cars, houses, buildings, wealth, women, etc. Once a person falls for worldly desire, everything — right or wrong, good or bad — seems equal to him. He then sins without hesitation.
Satan makes sin appear attractive to humans so that they see it not as bad but as pleasurable.
“Satan makes their deeds seem pleasing to them.” (Surah Al-Anfal, 8:48)
“I have made the worldly life pleasing to them.” (Surah Al-An’am, 6:112)
Examples:
- Adultery nowadays promoted as “relationships”
- Interest called “banking service”
- Music and entertainment called “recreation”
03. Instilling Fear and Creating Despair
Satan constantly tells humans, “If you follow the true path, you will face hardship,” or “You won’t gain anything by staying on the halal path,” or “Even if you repent, it’s useless because you have sinned too much.” He tempts to delay repentance, saying there is still time, but in the end, repentance is never done.
“Satan threatens you with poverty and commands you to immorality.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:268)
“Indeed Satan threatens his followers with poverty...” (Surah Aal-E-Imran, 3:175)
His goal is to keep humans on the path of sin and away from Allah’s mercy.
04. Showing False and Misleading Paths
Satan often misleads people in religious matters. People think they are doing good deeds, but they are actually astray.
“They think they are doing good deeds, but they are astray.” (Surah Al-Kahf, 18:104)
“I will mislead them, incite them to falsehood...” (Surah An-Nisa, 4:119)
Examples:
- Joining misguided sects while thinking one is supporting Islam
- Performing innovations (Bid’ah) or strange acts while believing they are part of the religion
How to Save Oneself from Satan?
This Satan, who dwells inside every human heart, can be repelled by many advices, one of which is the Holy Quran itself. All meditation, worship, crying, self-discipline, and hardship endured are for the sole purpose of driving away this whispering Satan. There is no other purpose or command for these.
As stated in the Holy Quran in Surah Al-Mu’min (40:60), Allah says: “O mankind, call upon your Lord alone and without associating anything with Him. Then respond to your call.”
(The Arabic word used is ud’uni – singular – meaning call alone; calling in pairs may not get a response.)
Allah says in the Quran: “Indeed, Satan’s plan is weak.” (Surah An-Nisa, 4:76)
What Should Be Done?
Always seek refuge in Allah. Say: “O Allah, guide me on the straight path always, grant me sustenance through halal means, give me the ability to perform regular prayer and fasting, help me to recite Quran and do Dhikr abundantly.” Try to keep company with righteous and God-fearing people. If in doubt, consult scholars or knowledgeable people.
Conclusion
Satan is the eternal enemy of mankind, and the four main tactics mentioned clearly in the Quran are:
Whispering evil suggestions (Waswasah)
- Making sin appear attractive
- Instilling fear and despair
- Creating confusion under the guise of religion
Therefore, a Muslim must always be vigilant, recognize Satan’s tactics, and defeat him.
