Hawdh al-Kawthar for the Prophet (PBUH)
Mention of Kawthar in the Qur’an
In Surah Al-Kawthar, Allah says:
"Indeed, We have granted you (O Muhammad) Al-Kawthar." (Surah Al-Kawthar, verse 1)
According to scholars of Tafsir, the word "Kawthar" linguistically means "abundant goodness". One of its specific meanings here is the magnificent reservoir in Paradise — Hawdh al-Kawthar.
Description of Kawthar in Hadith
Narrated by Anas ibn Malik (RA): The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
“Al-Kawthar is a river in Paradise. Its water is whiter than milk, its fragrance is sweeter than musk, and its taste is more delightful than honey. Whoever drinks from it will never feel thirsty again.”
(Sahih Muslim, Sahih Bukhari)
The Prophet's (PBUH) Vision on the First Heaven
When the Prophet (PBUH) ascended to the first heaven during Mi’raj, he saw a man with groups of souls to his right and left. When he looked to his right, he smiled; and when he looked to his left, he wept. The man greeted the Prophet (PBUH). The Prophet asked Jibreel (AS), “Who is he?” Jibreel replied, “He is Adam (AS), and the souls to his right are those of Paradise, while those to his left are destined for Hell. That is why he smiles when he looks right and cries when he looks left.”
(Bukhari, Hadith: 3342)
More Description from Hadith
It is also mentioned:
“The width of Hawdh al-Kawthar is equal to a month's journey. It is surrounded by goblets of silver, and water flows into it from the springs of Paradise.”
(Tirmidhi, Hadith 2581)
Who Will Be Allowed to Drink from It?
Only those who follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) — the righteous and faithful among his Ummah — will be allowed to drink from this pond. However, some people will be turned away. The Hadith warns that those who altered the religion or strayed from the Sunnah in this world will be prevented from drinking.
Conclusion
Hawdh al-Kawthar is a glorious gift for the Prophet (PBUH), and on the dreadful Day of Judgment, it will be a beacon of hope for his Ummah. Those who follow the Prophet’s example will earn the honor of drinking from it. Therefore, we must remain firm in faith, stay pure in deeds, and cling to the Sunnah to become worthy of this blessed water.
