What Are the Reasons for Not Connecting with Allah in Salah?
Salah is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam. It is an act of worship
through which a servant directly connects with Allah. The Qur'an says:
"Establish prayer for My
remembrance." — (Surah Taha, Ayah 14)
Yet in real life, we see many people
offering regular prayers, but they lack fear of Allah, self-purification, or
moral development. Some even engage in sinful and unjust acts despite praying
regularly. The question arises—why? Is something missing in the Salah?
What is Salah and why do we perform
it? What is the inner meaning (ma'rifah) and reality of Salah? Many who pray
don’t even know the essence of Salah. Allah mentions Salah in the Qur'an 82
times. But He mentions purity and staying away from satanic deeds 274
times. Why is that? Wouldn't once have been enough to make it obligatory?
Why repeat it so many times? In contrast, other acts of worship like fasting,
zakah, and Hajj are mentioned only once.
Why is Surah Al-Fatiha essential for Salah? Why is purification the key to
Salah, and why is Salah the key to paradise?
Reason
1: Salah has become mechanical and lacks heartfelt presence
For many, Salah has become
robotic—standing, reciting, bowing, prostrating, and finishing with
Salam—without ever realizing,
"I am standing before
Allah."
The Qur’an says about such people:
"So woe to those who pray, but
who are heedless of their prayer."
— (Surah Al-Ma'un, Ayahs 4-5)
Here, “heedless” refers to those who
outwardly perform Salah correctly, but their hearts are completely absent.
Allah also says:
"When they reach Hell, their
hearing, eyes, and skins will testify against them about what they used to
do." — (Surah Fussilat, Ayah 20)
Our body will testify against us.
The physical Salah performed by the body will be of no use if the heart did not
pray. The connection with Allah in Salah must be established by the heart,
not just the body.
We often pray while our hearts
wander. When we stand for Salah and prostrate before Allah, He clearly sees
that while our body is in submission, our heart is wandering in the market. The
body may be present, but if the heart is absent, then it is not truly Salah.
When the heart leaves the prayer and
wanders while the body remains, such a Salah may not only lack reward but may
even lead to ‘Wail’—a valley in Hell.
Reason
2: The burden of sins weighs down the heart
To reach the presence of Allah, the
soul must be purified. Those who are immersed in sin become heedless in heart.
"No! Rather, the stain has
covered their hearts due to what they used to earn." — (Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Ayah 14)
Haram earnings, gossiping,
arrogance, aiding injustice—these things distance the heart from Allah's light.
Bringing the heart under control and
achieving focus in Salah is a difficult task. Allah says:
"Seek help through patience and
prayer; truly, it is difficult except for the humble." — (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 45)
He also says:
"Indeed, prayer restrains from
shameful and unjust deeds."
— (Surah Al-Ankabut, Ayah 45)
The word “humble” refers to those
who are modest and sincere. Those who are not humble are disrespectful. One who
connects with Allah in prayer becomes humble and avoids sin, because their link
with Allah is established. But if the heart of the person in Salah wanders,
then that person commits extreme disrespect before Allah. Allah does not like
disrespectful behavior.
The one who fully brings their heart
under control and prays with concentration is undoubtedly humble. And Allah
Himself declared in the Qur'an that this is not an easy task.
Reason
3: Lack of Taqwa (God-consciousness) and Tazkiyah (self-purification)
Allah says in the Qur'an:
"Indeed, Allah is with those
who fear Him (muttaqeen)."
— (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 194)
But the Qur'an never says: “Indeed,
Allah is with those who pray (musalleen).” That is to say, just being a
person who performs Salah is not enough—taqwa and self-purification are
essential.
Reason
4: Lack of consistent (daaimi) Salah
The Qur'an says:
"Those who are constant in
their prayer." — (Surah Al-Ma'arij, Ayah 23)
This refers not just to the five
daily prayers, but to a lifestyle that is always in remembrance of Allah.
Reason
5: Self-satisfaction and showy worship
Many perform Salah not for Allah,
but to show off, or as a display of religiosity.
"So woe to those who pray, but
who show off." — (Surah Al-Ma'un, Ayahs 4-6)
In such Salah, there is no love, no
humility before Allah.
Reason
6: Absence of love for Allah
The foundation of connection with
Allah is love (mahabbah). If there is no love for Allah, Salah becomes a
duty, not devotion.
"Say: If you love Allah, then
follow me; Allah will love you."
— (Surah Aal-e-Imran, Ayah 31)
If love is missing in Salah, then
the presence of Allah is also not felt.
How
to Make Salah a True Connection with Allah
- Regular repentance and
striving for self-purification
- Praying out of love for Allah
and longing for Jannah, not just fear
- Understanding the meaning of
what is recited in Salah
- Avoiding robotic rituals;
instead, pray with mindfulness and slow, deliberate movements, especially
in sujood (prostration)
- Engage in frequent
remembrance of Allah (Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Astaghfirullah) to
purify the heart
Conclusion
Salah is an act of worship through
which a servant knocks on the door of their Lord five times a day. But if the
soul is absent, if there is no purity or love, that door does not open.
May Allah grant us the ability to
transform our Salah into true, constant communication with Him—so that we don’t
merely perform bowing and prostration, but also attain His nearness and
pleasure.
