The True "Guru"

The True "Guru"

The word 'Gu' means darkness, and 'Ru' means light. The one who can lead from darkness to the land of light is the true "Guru." A person with a dark heart can never be a Guru. A Guru who is attracted to the material world and surrenders his essence to it can never be a true Guru; such a person is a disgrace to the name of Guru and a weed among the followers of the spiritual path because he has allowed the filth of the world to enter him.

One may analyze the Quran scientifically and explain it atom by atom, becoming a Mufassir (commentator), but that does not make one a Guru. Similarly, acquiring vast knowledge and receiving blind veneration from followers does not make one a Guru. A true Guru walks alongside the disciple in every action, thought, meditation, and knowledge—connecting them with divine light to illuminate their dark heart.

Gradually, that heart will begin to shine, and in that light, the devotee will see various colors, forms, and visions. They may even hear voices from the realm of mysteries. Witnessing such phenomena, the devotee becomes more immersed in meditation and retreats into solitude, away from the impurities of the world. They wait in anticipation—when will their beloved come and speak to them in secret? Sometimes the beloved is the lover, and sometimes the lover becomes the beloved.

When a devotee reaches this stage, the ecstatic lover proclaims:

"Diwano ko duniya aur hi hai, har rang badalte rahte hai,
Is ishq ki manzil le aakar mastane badalte rahte hai."

(In essence: "For the mad lovers, the world is different; every color keeps changing,
Upon reaching the destination of this divine love, the enraptured ones keep transforming.")

On this journey, the Guru and disciple initially walk together. But after establishing the divine connection, the Guru gradually steps aside, allowing the disciple to continue alone.

One must remember that no matter how much one offers gifts, celebrates rituals, or engages in worldly acts of devotion, unless they find a true Guru or Murshid, they will not be lifted from the murky waters to drink the nectar of the eternal ocean. With mere flowery words and eloquent language, one may impress people, but they cannot awaken the dark heart or lead them into the realm of "The Great No."

The true Guru is the one who can ignite thousands of lamps from a single flame because he possesses an infinite source of light.
