"Whomever I am the Mawla, Ali is also his Mawla."
"Whomever I am the Mawla, Ali is also his Mawla."
The 19th of Ramadan is a day of deep mourning—a grievous attack on the sacred continuity of Islam as left by the Noor-e-Nabi (Light of the Prophet), Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), and the divine system of Wilayah (guardianship). At the beginning of the Wilayah era following Prophethood, the one declared by Allah and His Messenger as the Mawla (guardian) of the believers and the central figure of the sacred Ahlul Bayt and Wilayah, Hazrat Mawla Ali (AS), was a devoted servant of Islam.
From the 24th of Dhul-Hijjah, 35 AH, to the 17th of Ramadan, 40 AH, for a total of 4 years and 9 months, he served as the Caliph of Islam, chosen by the general public. At the conclusion of the Farewell Hajj, in a place called Ghadir Khumm, Allah commanded His beloved Prophet (PBUH) to declare:
"Anna Aliyyun Mawlal Mu’minin."
Meaning: "Ali is the Mawla of the believers."
This declaration is the primary extracted part of verse 67 of Surah Al-Ma’idah. In accordance with this revelation, in front of over one hundred thousand Muslims, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) proclaimed:
"Man kuntu Mawlahu fa haza Aliyyun Mawlahu."
Meaning: "Whomever I am the Mawla, Ali is also his Mawla."
In this sacred sermon, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) provided the final guidance for the future of Islam. Following this announcement, prominent figures from the Umayyad clan, including Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Mu'awiyah, congratulated Mawla Ali (AS).
Thus, after the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Hazrat Mawla Ali (AS) was the rightful first Imam-Caliph of true Islam, appointed by Allah and His Messenger. However, after the Prophet’s passing, this truth was overshadowed by the selfish conspiracies of the power-hungry Umayyad faction, who seized power unlawfully—without any nomination or approval from the people.
For the preservation of true Islam, Mawla Ali (AS) made the ultimate sacrifice, forsaking all personal and familial interests. His life remains an unparalleled example of selflessness, devotion, and righteousness.
At that time, the Khawarij (Kharijites) held an extreme and violent interpretation of religion. Their primary goal was to reestablish the rule of pre-Islamic ignorance, based on distorted religious laws for their own interests. They considered allegiance to Caliph Ali (AS) a sinful act and viewed the Caliphate as a form of personal worship. As a result, they saw it as a sacred duty to kill and torture all those loyal to the Caliph, regardless of gender. Since the era of the Rashidun Caliphs, the Kharijites have been in constant opposition to true Islam.
Due to their misguided ideology, countless luminaries of Islam were martyred by the Kharijites throughout history. Many esteemed Sahaba (companions of the Prophet) also suffered brutal oppression at their hands.
As part of their vicious conspiracy, under the direct order of the eternally accursed Munafiq (hypocrite) Mu'awiyah, a Kharijite assassin named Abdur Rahman plotted to kill Amir al-Mu’minin, Hazrat Mawla Ali (AS). This criminal arrived in Kufa and hid inside the Great Mosque.
On the 19th of Ramadan, at the time of Suhoor (pre-dawn meal), Mawla Ali (AS) entered the mosque and stood on the prayer mat for Fajr prayer. As he rose from prostration (sujood), the Kharijite assassin, who had been hiding with a poisoned sword, struck a powerful blow to his sacred head. Mawla Ali (AS) collapsed onto the prayer mat, his blessed body wounded by the treacherous attack.
Gradually, responding to the divine call of his Lord, on the 21st of Ramadan, at the age of 63, he departed from this world, leaving the entire Muslim nation drowning in sorrow.
Allahumma Salli ‘Ala Sayyidina Muhammad wa ‘Ala Aali Muhammad.
"May our mourning for Mawla Ali (AS) be a path of patience and restraint.
May our love for Mawla Ali (AS) be a source of strength and wisdom."
