Historical Context (Event Description)
During the Medina period of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in the 10th year of Hijra (632 AD), a Christian delegation from Najran came to Medina. They came to respond to the invitation of Islam and to participate in a question-and-answer religious discussion.
Main
Debate:
The main issue of the debate was the
nature of Jesus (AS). The Christians regarded Jesus (AS) as the Son of
God, whereas the Qur'an stated that he was a Prophet, created by Allah through
a miraculous process.
Quranic
Response:
Allah mentions in the Qur’an:"Indeed,
the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust;
then He said to him, 'Be,' and he was."— (Surah Al-Imran, 3:59)
The
Call for Mubahila:
When the Christians were not
convinced by the argument, Allah instructed the Prophet (PBUH) to challenge
them to Mubahila:"...Let us call our sons and your sons, our women and
your women, ourselves and yourselves, then let us pray earnestly to Allah, and
invoke His curse upon the liars."— (Surah Al-Imran, 3:61)
Who
Participated in the Mubahila?
The Prophet (PBUH) took no one else
but his Ahl al-Bayt (family) members for the Mubahila:
- Imam Ali (AS)
— the representative of "our own people"
- Lady Fatimah (AS)
— the representative of "our women"
- Imam Hasan (AS)
& Imam Husayn (AS) — the representatives of "our
children"
- Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself
This participation aligns with the
historical event known as "Al-‘Abā’ Incident" (حادثة الكساء or
"Hadith al-Kisa"), which is both a linguistic and spiritual parallel.
Spiritual
and Theological Significance
1.
The Status of Ahl al-Bayt:This event
proves that the Prophet’s (PBUH) close family members were not only his blood
relatives but also the spiritual guardians of Islamic truth.
2.
Guarantee from Allah:The Prophet (PBUH) would not have
brought anyone into the Mubahila who could have been doubted. This indicates
that all of them were truthful, pure, and reached the highest levels of faith.
3.
A Divine Method for Distinguishing Truth from Falsehood:Mubahila was a process through which, when all logical
discussions ended, Allah’s judgment would be sought through faith and
sincerity.
Differences
and Similarities in Sunni and Shia Interpretations
Sunni
Interpretation:Most Sunni scholars like Ibn Kathir,
Imam Razi, etc., accept that the five individuals mentioned in the verse—“our
sons, our women, ourselves”—refer to the five members of the Prophet's (PBUH)
family.
Shia
Interpretation:According to Shia beliefs, this
verse is a proof of the special status of Ahl al-Bayt and is one of the
strongest arguments for Imamate (leadership) of Ali (AS).
Modern
Impact and Lessons
- Religious Tolerance:
Despite disagreements, the Prophet (PBUH) sought a peaceful resolution
through dialogue.
- Self-Confidence:
This event teaches the importance of firm belief in one’s truth.
- Following Ahl al-Bayt: Today, Muslims around the world continue to follow and
love the Ahl al-Bayt in pursuit of religious and spiritual development.
Summary:
Mubahila is a divine method through which the mask of falsehood is
removed, and Allah’s mercy is showered upon the truth. It is not just a
historical event, but a profound expression of the spiritual and moral
foundation of Islam.
