Do you know, who was the funeral imam of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)?

The funeral prayer of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was unlike any other. It was extraordinary and exceptional. According to historians, there was no designated single imam to lead the funeral prayer. Rather, the Companions (Sahabah) performed the funeral prayer in separate groups.

First, the male Companions entered in groups and offered the funeral prayer. Then the women followed, and finally, the children participated. Each person prayed individually without an imam leading the prayer. This was the unique nature of the Prophet’s (PBUH) funeral.

A Glimpse Before His Passing

Before the Prophet’s (PBUH) passing, the Companions came to his presence. Seeing them, the Prophet (PBUH) had tears of sorrow in his eyes. He said, "I entrust you all to Allah; He will be your Companion." Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) asked, "O Messenger of Allah! The time of your departure seems near—who will bathe you after your death?" The Prophet (PBUH) replied, "My Ahlul Bayt (my family)."

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud then asked who would shroud him. The Prophet (PBUH) again replied, "My family." He further asked who would lower him into the grave, and again the Prophet said, "My family." Then he asked, "Who will lead your funeral prayer?" Tears fell from the Prophet’s eyes, and he said, "My funeral will not be like yours. Once my bathing is complete, you will all leave the room. First, Jibreel will offer my funeral prayer, followed by Mika'il, Israfil, and then the angels of the Throne in order. After that, your men, women, and children will come in and offer prayers and peace upon me. Then you will entrust me to Allah."

Where Was the Funeral Prayer Performed?

The funeral prayer and burial of the Prophet (PBUH) took place in the chamber of his beloved wife, Aisha (RA), which is now known as the Rawda Mubarak. He was not taken to any separate cemetery; instead, he was buried at the place of his passing, which is a Sunnah for Prophets.

The Account of Companion Salim ibn Ubayd (RA)

Salim ibn Ubayd (RA) narrated that when Abu Bakr (RA) wanted to visit the Prophet (PBUH), there was a huge crowd. He said, “Make way for me!” The people made space. He entered, lowered his head, and kissed the Prophet’s forehead. Then he recited the verse from the Qur’an:

“Indeed, you will die, and they will die as well.”
Abu Bakr (RA) then came out and was asked, “O friend of the Prophet! Has the Prophet (PBUH) passed away?” He replied, “Yes.” The people then confirmed the Prophet’s death with certainty.

The Companions asked him, “Will the Prophet (PBUH) have a funeral prayer?” He said, “Yes.” When asked how, he replied, “A group will enter his room and pray, then leave, followed by another group.” They asked, “Will he be buried?” He said, “Yes.” They asked, “Where?” He replied, “Where Allah took his soul, for surely that place is the most pure and blessed.” The Companions unanimously accepted Abu Bakr’s opinion. Abu Bakr (RA) then instructed the Ahlul Bayt to begin the bathing process.

Who Led the Funeral Prayer?

Historians agree that no one was appointed as a specific imam to lead the Prophet’s (PBUH) funeral prayer. Eminent Companions like Abu Bakr (RA), Umar (RA), and Ali (RA) entered and offered prayers in groups.

Imam Shafi’i (RA) and Qadi Iyad (RA) stated that the Prophet's funeral prayer was offered by individuals and no one led as an imam. According to Kitab al-Umm and Sirat al-Mustafa, “The Prophet’s funeral was indeed held, but each Companion prayed individually without anyone leading.” However, Ibn Sa’d in Tabaqat mentions that Abu Bakr and Umar (RA) once entered together and stood before the Prophet’s body and offered salutations and prayers, while the Companions behind them responded with "Ameen."

Order of the Funeral

The Companions performed the Prophet’s (PBUH) funeral prayer in the following sequence:

  1. First, the male Companions entered in groups and prayed.

  2. Then the women followed.

  3. Finally, the children offered prayers.

Each group entered and offered four Takbirs of the funeral prayer individually, without an imam.

Why This Unconventional Method?

According to scholars and historians, due to the unmatched status and honor of the Prophet (PBUH), the Companions wanted each person to directly partake in his funeral. Had a single imam led the prayer, many would have only followed behind. Thus, the decision was made to pray in groups without an imam—a reflection of their immense love, respect, and devotion.

Time of Burial

The Prophet (PBUH) passed away on Monday, and his burial took place on the night of Tuesday. The burial was supervised by Ali (RA), Abbas (RA), Fadl ibn Abbas (RA), and other close relatives.
